President's Message:

Dear Members and Friends,

Valorie Spence

Aloha and Welcome to our New ASID 2011-2012 Year!  What a year of change.  We cannot avoid it, so embrace change and emerge stronger and leaner through these tough economic times.  Both National and your new board are dedicated to those basic tenants of ASID membership:

      **Grow Your Business
      **Build Your Network
      **Expand Your Knowledge

Grow your business by helping us educate the public of the value of using ASID Allied and Professional members for their interior design needs.  You have differentiated yourself as a professional via your ASID membership, let’s get the word out to the community.  Let me know if you can write design articles; we are looking for a minimum of 12 articles to publish island wide.  Send press releases too.

ASID National invested heavily in the new branding.  Download and use the new appellation to increase your recognition.  Start thinking ahead to the Design Awards this new year.  Design all your projects with an award entry in mind.  Add the appellation “Award Winning Designer” to your signature.  More information on branding is available at http://www.asid.org/custom/thebrandstory/index.asp

Take advantage of ASID’s opportunities to expand your knowledge.   Check the asidhawaii.org website regularly for the calendar of events.  Go to Market and the major trade shows and conferences this year.  This is a great way to stay current, identify the new trends, and experience new introductions.  When you describe a product to your client that you have physically touched, experienced firsthand, your words—that communication, is different.  It is powerful.

Build your network.  Attend all CEU events, even if you are familiar with the topic.  The board will bring CEU programs to all islands this year.  You have the opportunity to meet great people, add experience, and expand your network of designers, vendors and resources.  The future of business is about relationships.

Join  your new board, get out of the office, participate in the events, help on the committees, and give back to our island community that has contributed to your success, then ASID will be able to enrich your business, your knowledge, and your life.

Yours in design,

Valorie Spence,

ASID President, Hawaii Chapter

Maui Design News:

September has been a busy month on our island.  We started the month on Oahu at the Pacific Club for the ASID Design Awards.  Nancy Schnur, ASID CAPS and Howard Dicus were excellent hosts.  Our many thanks to all who worked to put on such a beautiful evening.

Many thanks to Naomi of Whirlpool for hosting a wonderful and educational event at the Honolulu Country Club.  Great to see the new introductions from JennAir and KitchenAid.

Last month, Pacific Source hosted us with a Wolf/Subzero training seminar and update.  Thank you Gina Dunker, Allied Member, ASID

The judges for the BIA Parade of Homes spent a day on Maui evaluating projects.

Maui’s AIA, ASID and Maui Design Group all participated in a CEU and table top event with vendors, lunch, and gifts.  Lighting CEU seminar.  Both were great programs.  Vendors brought new product introductions.  We connected with the Reps, which is always valuable since we are so isolated—good to have a real person to talk with.  After lunch, we had our first quarterly MDG meeting.  We all look forward to the regular meetings again to stay current with what is happening in our island design world.  Good lunch; better fellowship.  Big thanks to Greg Endo, Pacifica Sourcing, for putting the event together.

We are looking forward to our fall visit from Debby Gray of DeSousa Hughes, who will host us at a Main Street Bistro Luncheon November 8th

John Murray will also be on island next month with new Kravet, Lee Jofa, Ralph Lauren, Brunschig & Fils introductions.

Respectfully submitted,
Maui Design Group
